Hero or Victim?

What if I fail? What if they’re disappointed in me? What if I get fired? What if I amount to nothing?
These thoughts buzz around my head like gnats. I try as I might to swat them away but they’re evasive. Maybe you can relate. So how do we deal with them?
Notice who you’re being.
In relation to “What Ifs”, I assert that we can come from two places: The Victim or the Hero.
The Victim is familiar. From this place, we are at the mercy of our self-doubt, feeling like we have no say in our own lives. The only thing we do here is incessantly worry. We go into this fight or flight mode. It’s an automatic response that we humans used ages ago to save ourselves from predators in the wild. Those predators were external; “lions and tigers and bears (Oh my)”. But unless you’re living out there in the wild, I’m going to assume that you’re not under attack as you read this.
This automatic response is necessary but as we have evolved, we use it in response to something different. Now, it seems we are thrust into fight or flight mode simply thinking about what could go wrong. Our thoughts ladies and gentleman, are both a blessing and a curse.
Take a step back and reflect on the kind of thoughts you have moment to moment. What do you hear? The Victim might hear the constant what if, I can’t, I’m not good enough, should have, could have, would have, I WISH. The list goes on. We’re all human and these thoughts are bound to creep up but what if we allow them to go in one ear and out the other? What if we make room for the Hero?
Ask yourself: What would I do if I knew I could not fail?
Personally, I’d have a massive YouTube following, I’d be a full time Life Coach, I’d inspire live audiences, I would move to California, I would travel the world, I would be fully confident in living out my sexuality. Essentially, I would be unstoppable. And that version of the truth fires me UP. So much so that I’ve decided not to care about the imagined catastrophe of going for it all.
What fires you up? What is your Hero story? And what are you going to do about making it your truth instead of some fantasy land you daydream about?
